Coming in 2012 from the Rada Film Group:What would you sacrifice for your child's education?
In 1999, two African American boys began kindergarten at a prestigious independent prep school. Their parents had high hopes for what this school would mean for their sons' future, but also a keen sense of what they might be missing in the predominantly white environment.
As the years unfold, and the boys grow up, we catch a rare glimpse into the complex universal issues structural, cultural, academic, social and personal that challenge African American boys from their earliest experiences in school.
Set against the backdrop of the nationwide racial achievement gap in education, when more than 50% of African American males do not graduate high school,
An American Promise chronicles the intimate story of two families efforts to provide the best education possible for their sons, even as they grapple with what that truly means.
An American Promise has received generous support from the Ford Foundation, the National Black Programming Consortium, the Sundance Documentary Fund, NYSCA and the Fledgling Fund.
